Utah and New Mexico Implement Tobacco Tax Increases

Important message from Bureau of Tobacco & Chronic Disease Chief Wayne Tormala:

Now that Utah and New Mexico have implemented new tobacco tax increases, you can view the overall map of state tax rates here.  Also, related tobacco tax fact sheets provided by the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (CTFK) can be viewed online here

With Arizona holding at $2.00 per pack, our tax rate remains significantly higher than the overall states’ average of $1.38 per pack.  However, as more states enact higher taxes, our ranking has dropped to 13th overall among all the states and U.S. Territories.  It is important to note that we are still surrounded on all sides by lower tobacco costs, and thus the trafficking of tobacco products from outside of Arizona continues to have an adverse effect on our tobacco tax revenues.
