NAQC Signs Letter to CMS

June 21, 2010

This communication covers two issues. First, an update and request for your action on the proposed Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) decision memo for counseling to prevent tobacco use; and second, an update on Medicaid reimbursement for quitline services.

Update and Request for Your Action on Proposed CMS Decision Memo

Currently, Medicare only provides coverage for counseling to prevent tobacco use in beneficiaries (e.g., senior citizens) who already have a disease or adverse health effect from tobacco use. June 21, 2010

Eighty-six percent of Arizona men say their general health is good, very good or excellent, according to the 2009 Behavioral Risk Factor Survey, contradicting a ranking by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Survey, which lists Arizona 30th in men’s health nationally.

According to the CDC, 73 percent of men in Arizona are overweight or obese, and, of the men who have had their cholesterol checked, 45 percent have high levels, 12 percent more than the national average.

More than one in five men in Arizona report that their activities are limited because of physical, mental or emotional problems, and men in Arizona rank worse than the national average in stroke, overweight and obesity, high blood pressure, heavy drinking, and getting the recommended levels of exercise.

The survey was released as part of Men’s Health Week, a national event that begins Monday. Information: www.tobaccofreearizona.com/resources.
