Havasu Regional Medical Center Goes Smoke Free as Part of GASO

Havasu Regional Kicks the Habit

November 7, 2011 -HavasuRegionalMedicalCenterwill be tobacco free beginning November 17, 2011, the date of the Great American Smoke Out.  As of that date, no tobacco use of any kind will be permitted inside or outside on hospital property. This initiative will include the elimination of designated areas outside ofHavasuRegionalMedicalCenterwhere employees, patients and visitors are currently permitted to use tobacco products.

“We have been evaluating this tobacco free initiative for the past several years,” stated hospital CEO, Sandy Podley.  “We discussed our plans with our Board of Trustees and the Medical Executive Committee and these groups unanimously endorsed this direction for the hospital.  Its time for us to join the other hospitals across the nation who have become smoke and tobacco free.”

“With that in mind, I am pleased to announce we have made the decision to implement this change effective November 17th, to coincide with the Great American Smoke Out date” Podley continued.  “While all of our buildings are currently smoke-free, the anticipated change will make the entire campus tobacco-free, both inside and outside.”

This initiative includes the elimination of all designated areas outside of Havasu Regional Medical Center, Havasu Surgery Centre, Cancer Treatment Centre, Urgent Care Center, Outpatient Diagnostic Center and Medical Office Building where employees, patients and visitors currently use tobacco products.

Havasu Regional Medical Center has joined national and state efforts to reduce the negative health effects of tobacco use on the community.  Tobacco use is the chief single avoidable cause of disease and premature death in our society, responsible for more than 430,000 deaths each year.  Tobacco use in and around hospitals poses health and safety risks for patients, employees and visitors.
