TEMPE, AZ – The Maricopa Community Colleges are about to get healthier. Today is Kick Butts Day, an annual celebration that empowers youth to stand up to tobacco. Maricopa Community Colleges Chancellor Rufus Glasper took the opportunity to remind students, employees, faculty and visitors that, as of July 1, 2012, all campuses will be 100% tobacco-free.
“Last fall, we announced our BreatheEasy initiative, which will make all ten of our campuses, skill centers, satellite locations and the district office tobacco-free starting July 1,” said Chancellor Glasper. “It’s the right thing to do for the health of everyone who sets foot on our grounds. ‘Kick Butts Day’ offers an important reminder that it’s better to never pick up the habit. But we are pleased to offer assistance for those who want to quit.”
Starting July 1, no tobacco product – including smokeless tobacco products and e-cigarettes – can be used on any Maricopa Community College property.
- This includes buildings, walkways, and parking lots. The borders extend to the edges of the campuses and other District-leased or owned properties. The new policy will not extend to perimeter sidewalks (those located beside public thoroughfares).
- There will no longer be areas on campus designated for smoking or available ashtrays.
- Students and employees who violate the tobacco-free policy may be subject to consequences, as with any other student or employee policy violation.
“The goal of this policy,” Chancellor Glasper continued, “is to provide a healthier learning and working environment.”
