Miami Anti-Tobacco Club President Vanessa O’Connor takes home the top honor at STAND’s 5th Annual Summer conference this past weekend. Vanessa received the MVP award for her club as well as the Arizona Youth Advocate of the Year Award (AzYAYA). This is no surprise to anyone who has worked with the Miami based club.
Led by their president, the club has attended six Miami Town Council meetings over the span of nine months dating back to October 2013. Visits included the observation of government process to actually being on the agenda to discuss smoke free parks. Additional visits included club members making statements during the public comments period and bringing in community members to speak in support of the club’s efforts.
On June 9, 2014, just three days after Vanessa received this honor; the Miami Town Council voted 4 to 2, with one council member not present, to make the Miami Veterans Park a smoke free environment. This move will protect the children who play there and the many community members who gather at the park for events.
This was great news for not only the club members but for Mr. Yanez, their club sponsor, who helped educate the students on issues the entire school year and who also attended all the town council meetings.
